Jaricka Thomas, Financial Literacy Advocate

Personal Notes

My passion for financial education and literacy is rooted in my personal financial challenges. Leaving graduate school with $66K in student loan debt, taking out $30K more in consumer loans without thinking, and living beyond my paycheck caused a lot of anxiety and uncertainty about my day-to-day life. After making tons of financial mistakes in my early adulthood, I realized how necessary financial literacy was for improving my physical health, mental health, and relationships.

As an occupational therapist by trade, I have worked for years with patients and clients within the community who have suffered the impact of financial illiteracy, leading them to decreased access to medications, low-quality healthcare, and forced retirement with little to no retirement savings.

Through my personal experiences and the experiences of my clients, I learned that I needed to make a change. With extensive self-study, training, and late-night readings, I created a personalized process to pay off over $63K in debt, save more, invest aggressively, and build a strong financial foundation.

The milestones I have achieved to reach this point have provided me with the ongoing motivation to reach others and guide them along their personal journeys toward financial freedom.
