Personal Finance Lesson Learned Through Best Practices

Imagine a young man 20 years ago who bought some real estate early, made some investments, and started a small business. Then he made some money mistakes—after all, he’d never had any money skills education. Drowning in debt, he sold off his assets, took a low-paying job, and spent his nights in a sweat from worry and stress. But then he started studying personal finance and turned his life around. This is just the kind of real-world personal finance lesson the National Financial Educators Council (NFEC) teaches in its financial literacy curricula.
A lot of us wish we had been taught more about money when we were young, to avoid the financial pitfalls so many people face today. The NFEC is an independent organization committed to providing such education. In collaboration with a team of highly-qualified financial experts and professionals, they have developed personal finance lesson plans designed to improve the financial capabilities—and thus the lives—of individuals around the globe.
Unlike most financial literacy organizations, the NFEC is not affiliated with any commercial enterprises and they have no hidden agenda of selling products. Their sole purpose is teaching personal finance and raising awareness about financial literacy. The NFEC curriculum packages have many benefits for consumers, instructors, organizations, and communities. Curricula are available for all age groups, and can be tailored to meet the needs of any audience—regardless of their knowledge levels and/or socioeconomic backgrounds.
Receiving personal finance lessons made a huge difference in the life of the young man in this example. He learned not only how to climb out of his personal hole, but also how to change his habits so he never fell down that hole again. By using best practices like realistic goal-setting, saving, and investing, he eventually built himself a secure future. Going through the NFEC curriculum offers similar benefits to anyone who participates in its personal finance training.
