Paul Goebel Earns Well-deserved Recognition with the 2023 Financial Education Instructor of the Year Award

Inspiration, collaboration, and leadership are the defining qualities of the National Financial Educators Council’s choice to receive the 2023 Financial Education Instructor of the Year (FEIY) Award: Paul Goebel. Paul spearheaded the creation of the Student Money Management Center at the University of North Texas, transforming the financial education program model into a dynamic, far-reaching initiative that has made a powerful impact on the lives of an entire generation of students.

Since 2011, the FEIY Award has honored one individual each year who has made exceptional contributions to propelling the financial wellness movement forward. The award was established based on the NFEC’s understanding that educators have the single strongest impact on learner success. Paul Goebel was chosen as this year’s honoree due to his outstanding alignment with the three top award criteria – education, awareness, and sustainability.

Education

Paul Goebel’s innovation, the UNT Student Money Management Center, came into being over the course of just a single semester in 2005. Since then, Paul and his team have reached nearly 167,000 students with financial education instruction and special events; and more than 11,000 students with personalized financial coaching through the Center. In addition, more than 200 universities and community colleges have reached out to Paul for his expertise and advice, resulting in the establishment of financial education programming at higher education institutions across the country. Paul also shares his content and instructional expertise at seminars, webinars, and conferences.

Awareness

Paul Goebel gives raising awareness about financial wellness top priority. He continually explores opportunities to find unique, relevant, and engaging ways to reach the ever-changing composition of UNT’s growing student body. Paul forms collaborative partnerships across university departments and offices to facilitate outreach and ensure holistic learning opportunities for all students campus-wide.

Sustainability

Goebel’s work extends beyond the UNT campus to bring sustainable financial education programming throughout Texas and around the U.S. As a case in point, Paul was a founding leader of the Texas Association of Collegiate Financial Education Professionals (TACFEP), the first such statewide networking association in the nation. His innovative, adaptable teaching style transforms financial instruction from ideation into implementation – laying a strong foundation for sustainability.
