Mark Edelson
Financial Services Professional & Financial Literacy Advocate

Personal Notes
Growing up I always had a personal interest in money and finance, and was further encouraged by my father, who was a financial advisor and helped so many people and their families. At the same time, it wasn’t until I learned my own financial lessons and heard the personal stories of family and friends, that I saw the great importance of financial literacy and the growing need for it. As a result, I am looking to use the interests and skills I’ve been given to provide the financial knowledge, tools, and resources to help others understand their current financial situation, discover action steps needed to improve their finances and achieve their personal goals, and make future informed financial decisions.
Bio
Mark received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and received the Mathematics Award and the Fr. Dan Egan Award for the most outstanding senior in a Bachelor of Science program. He then went on to work as a Human Capital Analyst for Deloitte Consulting, the world’s largest management consulting firm. While at Deloitte, Mark worked on their Actuarial team and collaborated with key stakeholders and senior management at various life insurance companies to document and improve their process for preparing quarterly financial statements, develop an Analytics and Enterprise Data Management (EDM) execution roadmap, and create Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) models to help prioritize initiatives and quantify the associated impact. Mark also served as an Actuarial Internal Specialist on various audits of U.S. GAAP, Statutory, and Tax financial reporting in coordination with accounting teams. From there, Mark pursued his love of teaching to become a high school math teacher at his alma mater, The Montfort Academy, a classical high school located in Westchester County, New York. While teaching various math courses, Mark strove to help his students understand the beauty and objectivity of mathematics, and to appreciate how mathematical relationships found in nature reflect the goodness of God’s Creation. Even after his time as a full-time math teacher, Mark has continued tutoring students in math, helping them regain their confidence and recognize their true potential. Following his time at The Montfort Academy, Mark went to work with his father as a Financial Advisor at Barnum Financial Group, and became a Registered Investment Advisor Representative by passing both the Series 7 General Securities and Series 66 Uniform Combined State Law Examinations. While at Barnum, Mark helped clients determine and clarify their financial goals, and offered advice to help them make financial decisions with confidence. Mark also enjoys volunteering in his local community, and previously served as the president of Credo Young Adults, a Catholic young adult group based in Westchester County that serves parishes in the surrounding area and fosters community through prayer, recreation and social opportunities, and volunteer work. Mark also teaches Religious Education to middle school students at St. Augustine’s Church in Ossining, New York with his wife, Julia, and works with her as a Youth Group Assistant for high school students at Holy Innocents Church in Pleasantville, New York. With his passion for teaching and his background in math and finance, Mark started giving financial education presentations to various young adult groups, while sharing valuable financial lessons he learned from his own experience. After receiving positive feedback from these presentations, he now seeks to continue helping others as a Certified Financial Education Instructor℠ with the National Financial Educators Council.
