Personal Statement
I am Dr. Wally T. Luckeydoo, a Career and Financial Education Specialist based in Nashville, Tennessee. I grew up in the hills of Appalachia, where opportunities were limited and resources were scarce. My father passed away when I was six months old, and my mother worked tirelessly to raise two boys on her own while providing for our basic needs. Growing up in poverty, I learned the difference between needs and wants at an early age, but I never had access to financial literacy education. These experiences inspired me to ensure that students today have the tools and knowledge to make informed financial decisions and build better futures.
Dr. Luckeydoo has spent his career advocating for students, families, and underserved communities by teaching practical, real-world financial skills. He currently serves as a Career and Technical Education Teacher and Work-Based Learning Coordinator at Smyrna High School, where he teaches Personal Finance and Dual Enrollment Personal Finance through Bethel University. He integrates technology and immersive learning experiences into his teaching, helping students understand concepts such as budgeting, investing, and planning for their financial futures. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor of Sports Management at Abilene Christian University and Cumberland University.
The need for financial education is personal for Dr. Luckeydoo. Growing up without financial guidance, he often felt overwhelmed and uncertain about how to make decisions that could have impact on his future. These experiences left a lasting impression and motivated him to ensure that others would not face the same challenges as he did after making several money mistakes of his own. Seeing students struggle with concepts that were once foreign to him reinforces his commitment to provide access to high-quality financial literacy instruction and resources.
One moment that stands out in Dr. Luckeydoo’s career occurred when a Work-based Learning student came to him worried about managing their first paycheck. The student was anxious and uncertain, asking questions about budgeting, saving, and balancing expenses. Dr. Luckeydoo guided them through the process, using examples, simulations, and real-world applications. Watching the student leave with a newfound sense of confidence and understanding reminded him of why financial literacy is essential. The experience was tangible – the nervous energy in the classroom, the sound of flipping pages, the click of calculators, and the relief on the student’s face when the concepts finally clicked.
Dr. Luckeydoo’s personal journey and professional experience have fueled his passion for advocacy, mentoring, and educating others about financial wellness. He believes that every student and family deserves access to financial literacy education that is engaging, practical, and empowering. By combining his personal story, professional expertise, and collaborations with various professional organizations, Dr. Luckeydoo helps expand financial literacy initiatives locally, statewide, and nationally.
Being part of this campaign allows Dr. Luckeydoo to extend his impact beyond the classroom. It gives him the opportunity to advocate for students and families, share best practices in financial education, and mentor educators in delivering effective financial literacy programs. Through this work, he strives to help communities build strong financial foundations and ensure that students have the knowledge and confidence to take control of their financial futures.
