Personal Statement from Nevada Community Champion Ana Salazar

Personal Statement

I grew up in a family of immigrants where money was approached cautiously and credit was often viewed as something to avoid. From an early age, I learned that if you could not afford something, you simply did without it. While those lessons taught me responsibility and discipline, I later discovered through my banking career that many financial tools, including credit, are not inherently good or bad. What matters is understanding how to use them responsibly. That realization sparked a lifelong curiosity about personal finance, financial behavior, and how people make financial decisions.

Throughout my more than 30 years in the banking industry, I had the opportunity to work with thousands of individuals and families facing financial challenges. As a branch manager, I became known as the person others would call when a customer situation was especially difficult. Time after time, I met people who were dealing with financial stress, damaged credit, mounting debt, missed opportunities, or goals they felt were out of reach. What struck me most was that many of these situations could have been prevented if individuals had received education, guidance, and encouragement earlier in the process. I often left conversations wishing I had been able to meet them before the problem developed rather than after they were already struggling.

Those experiences taught me an important lesson: financial wellness is not simply about information. Most people do not fail because they lack intelligence. They struggle because financial decisions are often connected to emotions, habits, confidence, fear, uncertainty, and past experiences. I became increasingly fascinated by the role behavior plays in shaping outcomes. The choices we make every day become habits, and those habits ultimately influence the quality of our lives, our opportunities, and our financial futures.

When the opportunity to become a professional coach emerged, everything came together. Coaching gave me a way to combine financial wellness, education, behavioral science, personal development, and human connection into a single mission. I realized I could help people more holistically, not just by teaching financial concepts, but by helping them gain clarity, challenge limiting beliefs, build confidence, and create meaningful action plans. In many cases, improving someone’s financial situation improves every other area of life. Likewise, improving self-awareness, confidence, and decision-making often leads to stronger financial outcomes.

My passion for financial wellness is rooted in a simple belief: people deserve opportunities that previous generations may not have had. I want individuals and families to have access to the knowledge, tools, and support that allow them to make informed decisions and create brighter futures. Whether I am working with students, employees, customers, or community members, my goal is always the same: to help people move forward with greater confidence, avoid unnecessary struggle, and realize that meaningful progress is possible.

Today, my involvement with the financial wellness movement allows me to contribute to a larger mission. Through education, coaching, advocacy, and continued learning, I hope to help create a future where people are empowered to make informed decisions, build healthy financial habits, and achieve goals that once felt beyond their reach.

My goal is simple: help people learn earlier, act sooner, and avoid unnecessary struggle by giving them the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to build the future they want. Helping others discover those possibilities is what continues to inspire my work every day.
