Financial Literacy Certification Test Standards
In developing its financial literacy certification test, the NFEC adhered to its own rigorous framework and standards that define the qualities and skills a certified financial instructor must possess. This set of standards lays out the tools for teacher preparation, performance measures, and self-assessment that assure the public that NFEC-certified educators are held to the highest criteria of practice when teaching financial literacy.

Below we offer an example of one volunteer’s journey toward realizing her vision of teaching college students how to manage their money effectively.
This woman had been volunteering on campus, but wanted to extend her efforts into the financial education arena by bringing money management lessons to the college students she served. Not knowing where to begin, she started researching where to get help. Immediately her search focused on the NFEC’s Certified Financial Educator programs, which she discovered would provide her with credentials, credibility, and expertise toward attaining her goals.
After she passed the financial literacy teacher certification, she was able to conduct events with confidence. A couple of initial successes convinced her to develop her own brand. The NFEC offers branding for all program graduates, strategically placing their logos and color schemes on live presentation resources. She used these to expand her program and participate in the many initiatives graduates become eligible for, such as FLEC promotions and Financial Educators Day in April. The NFEC website also featured her blog posts, giving her third-party credibility and added exposure.
