Center for Financial & Consumer Outreach
The NFEC developed a comprehensive statewide initiative aimed to empower Pennsylvania residents with practical financial education. In partnership with Penn State Erie’s The Behrend College and the Center for Financial & Consumer Outreach, the NFEC designed an outreach campaign closely aligned with partner objectives.
The pre-launch phase was spent building relationships and creating a program that met University program objectives. A comprehensive awareness campaign was begun and further focus was placed on developing relationships with schools and nonprofit organizations. These efforts aligned with Penn State’s objective to connect with community groups to encourage higher education.
The ongoing campaign launched with a high-profile event: the High School Symposium. More than 400 youth, educators, and volunteers participated in this two-day event. Youth from 15 high schools took part in the NFEC’s Real Money Experience hands-on financial literacy workshop. Here students visited 12 booths where they received tools for handling the financial decisions they would face post-graduation. At the same time, educators and volunteers took part in the NFEC’s Certified Financial Education Instructor training program so they could continue delivering the lessons the students learned at the RMX event.
The High School Symposium launched the statewide educator training initiative. Educators from more than 100 schools and nonprofits undertook a portion of the NFEC’s Certified Financial Educator Instructor training program. The NFEC trained the Director of the Center for Financial & Consumer Outreach to teach volunteers, educators, and concerned citizens how to deliver financial literacy lessons. This ongoing service is now offered across Pennsylvania; the influence and impact of the service is magnified as qualified people share the message of financial literacy with youth statewide.
The educator training outreach launched phase three of the initiative: the Financial EduNation Campaign. The Resource Center provides complimentary personal finance resources to parents, students, educators, and community groups. These materials, developed by the NFEC’s highly-qualified team of educators, financial professionals, and financial education experts, include curriculum, multimedia learning centers, training, and access to turnkey money management programs. The Resource Center was custom-branded for Penn State.
The fourth phase focused on awareness and expansion of the state-wide Campaign. A solid foundation of supporters, partners, and internal advocates are currently building this initiative from the foundation laid in its first three phases. The high-profile High School Symposium and Real Money Experience events were annualized to provide signature events for the community. The NFEC’s public relations team is launching a comprehensive media outreach campaign, starting with a statewide Public Service Announcement and enlisting celebrity supporters to bring the initiative into the mainstream.
The Penn State campaign has achieved sustainability. Partners, sponsors, and collaborative efforts have ensured that the outreach associated with the campaign pays for itself. Thus the program reaches the largest number of youth and people across Pennsylvania who support youth development.
Special thanks to Penn State Erie, The Behrend College and all the sponsors, volunteers and supporters.

Salvation Army Dallas and National Veterans Foundation: Adult Programming
The NFEC designed a custom adult financial literacy program to meet the needs of the Salvation Army Dallas and the National Veterans Foundation. The program, primarily focused on financial recovery, was geared toward the low-to-moderate income clientele these respective organizations target.
Both programs featured a custom eight-hour financial education workshop for clients. The program included custom PowerPoint presentations, co-branding, marketing material design, sponsorship outreach forms, student guides, and Certified Financial Education Instructor training.
The workshop was customized to best reach each individual group. For Veterans, the NFEC took special training to gain a deeper understanding about PTSD and its impact on personal financial decisions. For the Salvation Army, focus groups were held to ensure that the material met the needs of the people who receive support from this organization.
Chrystal Carlisle, Social Services Supervisor for The Salvation Army Dallas states,
“The program is going wonderfully. Kelly is doing an awesome job and our clients have been very receptive of the information and her presentation. Thanks again, the presentation went GREAT, we will be talking with you soon.”
The NFEC also conducted a PR campaign event for the National Veterans Foundation to honor graduates and other veteran participants the week before the 4th of July. This event received local news coverage, helping give participants a sense of pride in their commendable accomplishments.
The NFEC encourages you to support the Salvation Army and National Veterans Foundation for their service to communities around the country.

Oregon State University
OSU sought material for its financial literacy initiative that met the highest educational standards while being practical and usable. Their goal was to provide students with personal finance knowledge that will help them both in school and after graduation.
The NFEC developed for-credit coursework that met OSU’s detailed request. OSU personnel submitted a list of more than 70 topics to be addressed in the college-level personal finance course. The NFEC created customized lesson plans in accordance with their request in an effort to help students pick up fundamental financial skill sets.
The curriculum was designed for maximum flexibility; it can serve as a 1, 2, or 3 unit course and can be taught live or on e-learning platforms. The final deliverable was a custom branded curriculum package including: instructor guide, student guides, instructor’s resources, multimedia components, and rigorous testing.
To accommodate OSU’s specific needs, the NFEC created material that met ADA compliant regulations and standards set by OSU. The Certified Financial Education Instructor training program was also provided to ensure that the instructor felt confident to deliver the coursework effectively.
The NFEC commends Oregon State University for its efforts to provide a comprehensive for-credit college personal finance course.

[/fusion_builder_row_inner]Simon Scholars: Game-based Learning
The NFEC is celebrating its third year hosting the financial literacy event at the Simon Family Foundation’s Summer Conference. In each of these three years, 100 college-bound youth participated in a three-day event offering training in various life skills. The NFEC’s role was to provide complete event production for the financial education portion of the event.
The Summer Conferences are hosted at Chapman University and more than 100 current Scholars and alumni are invited to participate. Students enjoyed a variety of activities designed to prepare them to face life in the “real world.”
One of the many conference highlights is the National Financial Educators Council’s hands-on financial literacy event, the Real Money Experience (RMX). RMX gave Simon Scholars a chance to visit booths where they practiced making the life decisions they’ll encounter when they move away from home.
RMX presents fourteen “skills booths” that offer practical financial literacy lessons that engage students through live interaction with volunteers. Participating youth (Junior High through College) get practical experience making the financial decisions they’ll face after they graduate, but in a safe environment.
Simulating real-world experience is proven to dramatically increase students’ retention and keep them talking about the event long after it’s over. This lasting impression also benefits our Patrons, who get the opportunity to connect with students one-on-one – which helps build top-of-mind awareness.
“We just received the Financial Literacy Event Report. Wow! This is fantastic! We can easily show our board how much students learned. We’ve just begun planning our summer conference, and would like to offer the scholars your amazing financial workshop. Thank you again! I can’t wait to share this.” – Joanna Mueller, Program Director, Simon Family Foundation
The National Financial Educators Council (NFEC) is honored to serve the Simon Family Foundation at their annual Summer Conference. The generous scholarships offered to each Simon Scholar are commendable and contribute to maintaining the 90% success rate of students active in the program or having graduated from college.

Los Angeles Department of Parks & Recreations
The National Financial Educators Council has produced a personal financial literacy event custom-tailored for the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department to improve financial capabilities among youth participating in a work experience program.
The program designed for LA Country Parks and Recreation is delivered as a full-day event integrating lecture-style instruction with games and activities. Participants played the Real Money Experience (RMX) classroom financial literacy game, an activity that immerses youth in personal finance simulation coursework.
The curriculum is a unique learning experience that combines gamification with project-based learning. Participants build the skill sets they need to make personal financial decisions aligned with their personal goals through hands-on, realistic experiences. Youth participants reported feeling both entertained and engaged.
Pre- and post-testing and surveys were conducted to quantify the impact of the personal financial literacy program. Both quiz and survey results were quite positive, demonstrating that participants improved their knowledge about money management matters. Most participants felt that the lessons they learned will have positive impact on their futures.
