The NFEC’s Certified Financial Education Instructor program helps individuals acquire the expertise, credibility, and self-assurance necessary to teach money management lessons effectively. Graduates of this premier professional development course report that they experience greater enjoyment teaching and achieve better results from the audiences who attend their presentations.

This training is designed to help you increase your impact as a financial educator. You will develop skills and learn techniques that help you motivate, engage, educate and move participants of all ages to take positive financial action.

Teaching personal finance requires a broad scope of skill sets. The best educators understand that pedagogical, “one size fits all” methods do not work for teaching this subject matter. The topic of money elicits emotional reactions in people – anything from excitement, to anxiety, to shame. If your goal is to help participants get or change financial behaviors, simply imparting information is not enough. CFEI course graduates have learned how to better manage participants’ emotions to lead them toward financial wellness.

Other financial educator training programs fail to address behavior modification or financial psychology – they simply teach potential instructors how to deliver specific curriculum. Such training produces ineffective presentations that lack authenticity and fail to connect with the audience. The Certified Financial Education Instructor program is distinctive. It develops educators’ capabilities so they can effectively teach personal finance – no matter which curricula or presentations they use.

Because financial literacy is a unique subject, you need the skill sets teachers use in the classroom, techniques financial professionals use during client consultations, and instructional strategies employed by seasoned financial education experts. This training is divided into four areas: Planning and Preparation, The Classroom Environment, Instruction, and Professional Responsibilities.

Throughout this course, you are encouraged to bring your own unique experience and background to the educator role. The training helps you share your passion for teaching financial literacy in an authentic, believable fashion. Graduates become able to better connect with the audience and help them develop the habits they need to work toward their financial goals.

Wake Technical Community College

The NFEC designed, deployed and manage a campus wide campaign at Wake Technical Community College with the SunTrust Foundation as the sponsor since 2013. To meet the goal of raising financial literacy competencies among Wake Tech students, staff, and community members the NFEC developed the multimethod programming and developed the branding for the SunTrust Foundation Center for Financial Education at Wake Technical Community College.

Combining live events, financial education-based contests, an eLearning center, interactive experiences, and a personal finance mobile app, the NFEC built an authentic, dynamic learning experience while giving students access to practical financial education programming.

To date this initiative has included more than 150 live instructional events for students, parents, faculty and staff. In addition to live instruction, promotional events and contests encourage active participation while raising awareness about the program. Online and mobile learning also contribute to the educational mix. The NFEC’s proprietary eLearning platform forms the backbone of the Center’s online personal finance initiative.

Arizona State University & MidFirst Bank

The NFEC created a campus-wide peer financial literacy initiative for MidFirst Bank to deploy across Arizona State University. This program is going into its fifth year and was designed to widen the reach of financial literacy programming and improve the financial capabilities of its students.

The NFEC developed the core campus-wide campaign, including the materials they needed to host and promote their financial literacy programming. At the center of the campaign were their student-led program facilitators.

The program was peer-led, so Arizona State University students were trained and certified to deliver the customized workshops. Both live in-person and virtual training were provided to students who participated in the Certified Financial Education Instructor training course.

Oregon State University

OSU sought material for its financial literacy initiative that met the highest educational standards while being practical and usable. Their goal was to provide students with personal finance knowledge that will help them both in school and after graduation.

The NFEC developed for-credit coursework that met OSU’s detailed request. OSU personnel submitted a list of more than 70 topics to be addressed in the college-level personal finance course. The NFEC created customized lesson plans in accordance with their request in an effort to help students pick up fundamental financial skill sets.

The curriculum was designed for maximum flexibility; it can serve as a 1, 2, or 3 unit course and can be taught live or on e-learning platforms. The final deliverable was a custom branded curriculum package including: instructor guide, student guides, instructor’s resources, multimedia components, and rigorous testing.

To accommodate OSU’s specific needs, the NFEC created material that met ADA compliant regulations and standards set by OSU. The Certified Financial Education Instructor training program was also provided to ensure that the instructor felt confident to deliver the coursework effectively.

Arizona Attorney General’s Office

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office sought to expand its role of serving military and veteran families by hosting financial literacy and consumer protection initiatives. They contacted the NFEC to train their team of financial education instructors, provide resources, and support them through the grant application and funding process.

The Attorney General’s Office sought to serve a broad population, ranging from people experiencing financial problems to people who were financially sound. Beneficiaries of the training were referred through veterans’ court mandates, interested veterans and active duty personnel, first responders and their family members. The training team had experience teaching these various groups, but many expressed concern about their confidence to teach personal finance.

One of the AG Office’s top goals was to address those concerns and ensure that their team of instructors was capable and qualified to teach financial education subjects. They sought an instructor training course that would helped the educators gain a better understanding of each group they serve, engage with each participant in a meaningful way, and encourage positive behavior molding.

Mesa County, City of Grand Junction, School District 51

Karen Troester, Vice President of US Bank, did not wait around for someone else to make a difference. She took it upon herself to empower the youth in her community with financial literacy skills that can make a lasting, positive difference in their lives.

She hired the NFEC to build a financial education outreach promotion and create buzz to encourage financial literacy in her community. The campaign centered around a high-profile event designed to generate momentum for ongoing financial education programming.

After meeting with key stakeholders, the event solution Troester selected was Money XLive (MXL). Meeting their goals of gaining high-profile media coverage, attracting more than 100 attendees, and getting the community excited would take celebrity and entertainment draws. MXL is a show that leverages the power of sports stars, celebrities, DJs, live bands, and financial education experts to give today’s youth real-world advice about managing their finances.

Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation

For the last six years, the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department has charged the NFEC with the task of improving financial capabilities among youth participating in a work experience program. To address this goal, the NFEC developed custom programming to meet departmental objectives.

To meet their timeline goals and address the fact that some Parks and Recreation locations have no Internet connection, the program designed for LA Country Parks and Recreation centered around live presentations. These presentations were conducted by members of the NFEC’s Personal Finance Speakers Association and Certified Financial Education Instructor graduates.

Two of our graduates, Diane Larsen and Shannah Compton, conducted the last few events. Diane Larsen is a Certified Financial Education Instructor who was selected by the U.S. State Department to travel as a financial literacy ambassador to South Africa. Shannah Compton is a member of the NFEC’s Personal Financial Speakers Association and was named Certified Financial Planners Board Ambassador in 2014.

The NFEC partnered with Penn State CFCO to deliver comprehensive financial education programming across the state of Pennsylvania. This campaign featured more than 30 financial literacy assets provided by the NFEC, including special events, celebrity partnerships, a custom training website, performance testing, volunteer training and more.

At the center of this campaign was the effort to train educators and volunteers across the state with the Certified Financial Education Instructor Training. Educators from more than 100 schools and nonprofits participated in the NFEC’s Certified Financial Educator Instructor training program. This ongoing service now is offered across Pennsylvania; the influence and impact of the service is magnified as qualified people share the message of financial literacy with youth statewide.

Salvation Army National Veterans Foundation

The NFEC designed a custom adult financial literacy program to meet the needs of the Salvation Army Dallas and the National Veterans Foundation. The program, primarily focused on financial recovery, was geared toward the low-to-moderate income clientele these respective organizations target.

Both programs featured a custom eight-hour financial education workshop for clients. The program included custom PowerPoint presentations, co-branding, marketing material design, sponsorship outreach forms, student guides, and Certified Financial Education Instructor training.

The workshop was customized to best reach each individual group. For Veterans, the NFEC took special training to gain a deeper understanding about PTSD and its impact on personal financial decisions.
