Personal Statement from Connecticut Community Champion Terraine Patman

Personal Statement

I have spent much of my life navigating systems that were never designed to teach people how money actually works. Growing up, financial conversations were rare, and when they did happen, they were usually rooted in fear, silence, or survival. Over the years, I saw the same pattern repeating itself in the lives of the people around me. It became clear that financial literacy is not just a skill – it is a lifeline. My own financial illiteracy realization is what pulled me into the financial wellness movement. My professional experience gives me the organizational discipline and people-centered communication needed to guide others, but my passion comes from something deeper: the belief that Financial Literacy Is A Birthright®.

My personal journey with money has shaped the way I show up for others. I know what it feels like to be financially overwhelmed, to make decisions without the right information, and to carry the weight of financial stress alone. I remember nights when I could not sleep because I was trying to figure out how to stretch what I had, how to recover from mistakes or how to rebuild after setbacks. Those moments taught me empathy, resilience, and the importance of accessible, relatable financial literacy education. They also taught me that people do not fail because they are irresponsible; they struggle financially because no one ever taught them the rules of the money game. That truth stays with me, and it fuels my commitment to making sure others avoid life-long money struggles and do not have to learn the hard way.

There was a turning point for me: the moment when I realized I was financially illiterate was the moment I knew financial wellness was not just something I cared about, but something I was called to champion. I watched people I loved go through similar financial struggles to mine, losing opportunities simply because they did not have the right financial literacy education early enough. I saw families working hard but still falling behind because they did not understand credit, budgeting, or long-term planning – just like me in my early adulthood. I have met individuals who were one conversation away from a completely different financial outcome. Those experiences made me decide that I wanted to be part of the solution. I wanted to help people before the crisis, before the debt, before the missed opportunity. I wanted to be the person I wish I had met earlier in my own journey.

Being part of this financial wellness campaign gives me the platform to do exactly that. It allows me to combine my lived experience, my professional strengths, and my passion for community empowerment. Leading this initiative in my area means I get to reach people at the right time – not when they are already financially overwhelmed, but when knowledge can still change the trajectory of their lives. My goal is to help individuals and families build financial confidence to make sound financial decisions, financial stability, and long-term economic wellness. I want to make financial literacy education accessible, relatable, and rooted in real-life understanding. Through this campaign, I am able to contribute to a movement that aligns with my values and supports my personal mission to help people transform their financial futures with clarity and confidence. Cash Money Matters Academy does just that and cost is never a barrier. https://cashmoneymattersacademy.org/
