Personal Statement

I’ve been passionate about education for as long as I can remember. In my twenties, I volunteered as a tutor and went on to direct two after-school programs in a neighborhood of highly-concentrated poverty. I loved working with children and training tutors, but over time I began searching for more ways I could provide long-lasting support and empowerment to the students and their families. I just wasn’t sure what that would look like yet.

Fortunately, I had a dear friend who was a Credit Counselor, and he insisted I would love working with him. It seemed like a complete mismatch at first. After all, I didn’t know the first thing about money or credit, despite having earned a Master’s degree. How could I possibly help people navigate their finances?

As it turns out, my friend was right! In 2013, I became an NFCC-certified credit counselor and HUD-certified housing counselor, and I discovered a passion for working with consumers and breaking down financial concepts. Within a year, I was facilitating financial wellness workshops around the San Francisco Bay Area, leading department-wide trainings for my peers and helping onboard new counselors.

Since then, I’ve constantly looked for ways to make financial education more accessible to the public. I’ve worked as an educator and coach for the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and the SF LGBT Center, and I’ve written about money and credit for dozens of national publications and brands, including Experian, Investopedia, Forbes Advisor, and more.

Now, as I join the NFEC in their mission of financial empowerment, I see my work coming full circle. My experience has taught me that financial education can completely change a person’s quality of life, and the younger that education begins, the better. The NFEC is transforming access to financial education, and I’m proud to contribute to that effort.
