Personal Statement
I have been intrigued by personal finance since I was a child. I started my first job as a 9-year-old selling seeds door to door. I progressed to three newspaper routes as an 11-year-old and then added working part-time at a drive-through convenience store in high school. By the time I graduated from high school, I had saved enough to pay for my first year of college. From that experience as a youngster, I learned the importance of setting financial goals, working hard, and saving and investing to achieve important goals. Personal finance has always been something that I have been passionate about and enjoy teaching to others, especially young people who are starting out on their financial journeys.
I have always been passionate about education. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Lehigh University and a Master of Science degree in personal financial planning from The College for Financial Planning. I also earned the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designations from The American College of Financial Services. Additionally, I acquired a graduate certificate in Principles of Finance from Harvard University Extension School. I feel my extensive knowledge of personal finance allows me the privilege of helping others garner the personal finance education they need to navigate their financial lives successfully.
Prior to working in personal finance education, I worked in the financial services industry for many years where I was involved in multiple functions including product design, systems programming and acceptance testing, customer proposal design, and product compliance. My work involved multiple product lines including annuities, life insurance, 401(k) plans and stable value funds. Working in the financial services industry taught me first-hand that financial products are very complex. I realized how important it is for people to be financially literate so that they can navigate the ever-increasingly complex world of personal finance.
Feeling like I wanted to do more to help others navigate their personal finances, I left the financial services industry and began writing personal finance books, including Go Simple: The Playbook to Financial Security and Grow Your Money Protect Your Wealth. I ultimately founded my financial literacy institute, The Saucon Creek Institute for Financial Literacy, where I develop personal finance curriculum and work one-on-one with individuals in need of personal finance education.
Beyond my passion for personal finance education, I enjoy visiting the many museums in Philadelphia, attending Phillies baseball games, and exploring the Schuylkill River Trail with family and friends. I am a supporter of the Fox Chase Cancer Center and look forward to our annual gala to raise funds in the fight against cancer.
