Personal Statement
I was raised by first-generation immigrants; born in New Jersey, raised in Georgia. My native language is Spanish and I learned English in a daycare in New Jersey. My experience primarily comes from both my family’s financial struggles and my own struggles to make good financial decisions. At the age of 20, I started working for myself as an independent contractor – freelancing as a consultant and personal assistant. I started managing tax and financial information and forms for a trucking company, through which I began to develop my ambition for the entrepreneurial world; but at the same time, also made me realize that I was not financially literate and had no clue how to manage my finances.
My lack of financial literacy knowledge and ability to make responsible financial decisions left me homeless from 2023 to 2024. During this time, I learned a lot of lessons and was forced to educate myself on financial literacy concepts. I even started working toward building my credit and getting rid of all my debt (a task and concept that wasn’t even spoken of in my household or in my educational system). In 2024 – while still homeless – I participated in the Miss Georgia USA pageant as Miss Clayton County 2024. During the competition my platform was financial literacy, and the conception of “The Dark Horse Rising” began to form.
I created The Dark Horse Rising with one main goal in mind: to empower financially healthy mindsets among young individuals in underserved communities. Growing up in Clayton County, I saw how little was being done to help youth in our community. The graduation and knowledge retention rates are appalling; having graduated from this community and county, I am very aware of what is and isn’t being done. We have high school seniors who have no clue what next step to take, no idea where to put their income besides bills and entertainment. We continue leading each generation deeper and deeper into poverty instead of empowering community members to explore different lifestyles or opportunities beyond just being an employee. I’m here to start the change necessary to inspire a bigger movement.
As I embark on this journey, my vision is to build the pioneers of our future in whatever facet of life they choose. I will not allow the next generation to feel as lost as I did, to go without food or resources, opportunities or connections; to live in scarcity, doubt or fear; or to be left without a voice. Change begins with one person and the change starts here with the NFEC. My position on the GFEC Advisory Board allows me to expand my reach and provide the resources, opportunities, mentorships, and programs that so many underserved – and often ignored – communities lack. As a leader, I am determined to use my connections to build generations of young leaders who make financial decisions with confidence, clarity, and introspection so they can start building generational wealth and lead us all to a more prosperous future.
