NFEC Position Statement

To help people work toward more secure financial positions, financial training must start young and include a focus on education, behaviors, and systems. As children mature into adults, they should take on more financial responsibilities that include paying their own bills and earning their own income. This process can start with paying allowances for chores and asking children to contribute toward the household finances, and grow into earning their own money outside of the home and paying for bills they incur. Before youth leave home, they should have at least a few years of experience taking care of themselves, so they can prepare for the financial realities of life in a safe environment.

As adults, critical attention should be placed on modifying behaviors that may take them off course. Each adult is in a different financial situation, so we must take care to customize resources to best meet their needs.

Whatever their age or socioeconomic background, people need high-quality financial education that focuses on addressing their financial behaviors. Thanks to our global team of champions, financial educators, and coaches, we are working toward a shared vision of providing people the skills they need to work toward greater financial security.
