Fifty-seven members of Prairie View A&M’s Naval ROTC attended a complimentary seminar on credit presented by CFEI and PFSA member Kieth Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman was asked to speak by a school guidance counselor during the unit’s weekly meeting.

“They were very much interested in the information overall, because it had never been presented to them before”, said Mr. Hoffman. Subjects included credit cards and credit scores, and the importance of establishing the latter. Student questions included when and how credit scores could impact their lives, good vs. bad credit, and obtaining credit cards. One asked specifically if their credit might be checked when renting an apartment. Mr. Hoffman also distributed a simulated set of terms and conditions for a credit card application, to help students learn about credit card company practices and how to read between the lines into some of the statements credit card companies often make.

“College is probably the best time reach students” said Mr. Hoffman, speaking with regard to their level of interest. Mr Hoffman has spoken to younger and older audiences on various aspects of financial literacy, from real estate agents to a Girl Scout Troop. Other PFSA speakers have made similar statements regarding college-age adults, as by this time, many have come to realize – often via a rude awakening – that they needed to become financially literate much earlier in life.
