Community Champion: Benjamin Liff
The same compassion and inquisitiveness that Benjamin Liff exhibits in the professional sphere extends into his personal life as well. Having traveled widely and lived abroad, he draws upon his past experiences for inspiration to help students discover educational environments where they can learn and thrive. Liff’s dedication to the financial wellness movement stems from his recognition of the importance of giving families clear guidance to navigate choices that will determine their children’s futures.
Working together with his wife, Haze, over the past 20 years, Benjamin Liff has come to realize that financial wellness is about opportunity – the ability for families to change their life trajectories by simply understanding how money works. By combining his academic background with his passion for teaching and helping others, Benjamin has shown himself to be a true community leader and champion. His skill at educational consultation is heightened by his empathy, connection, inclusiveness, and global outlook.

Personal Statement
I came into financial wellness work through my life in education. For nearly two decades I have taught, advised, and supported students and families in the United States and abroad. I have worked in boarding schools, colleges, and international education programs where I have seen a consistent pattern. Families care deeply about giving their children the best possible educational path, but many struggle to make clear decisions because they do not understand how financial aid really works or because their household finances are already stretched thin. My academic background, my history in curriculum design, and my passion for teaching became the foundation for my commitment to financial wellness. Helping people get financially organized is not just about numbers. It is about helping them gain the clarity they need to choose the right educational opportunities with confidence.
My motivation comes from personal experience. I was the classic young adult who had no idea how money worked. I took out credit cards in college and carried debt I did not know how to manage. When I moved to China after graduation, an old Bank of America account sent me to collections over a balance of a little more than three dollars because I had not closed it correctly. My wife and I returned to the US during the aftermath of the 2008 crisis and lived with my father for two years while his home was in foreclosure. We relied on WIC and other assistance programs while we tried to stabilize our lives. Later, during graduate school, we took out far more student loans than we needed because we believed it was the only way to get ahead in an expensive area. By the time I finished my degree, we were holding six figures in student debt. Learning from writers in the financial independence community was the turning point. Their work taught me how money actually functions and how compounding, budgeting, and investing can change a family’s trajectory. By working in boarding schools with subsidized housing and by saving aggressively in retirement accounts, my wife and I were able to shift from feeling buried to feeling in control. That swing from fear to stability is something I have never forgotten, and it shapes the way I help others who feel overwhelmed by their own financial and educational choices.

Being part of the NFEC aligns directly with what I care about most. It lets me work with families before they are forced into stressful decisions that limit educational options. The work supports my long-term goal of bringing financial clarity to teachers, service workers, and families who often navigate complex schooling and budgeting decisions with very little support. By contributing to this initiative, I can help people understand their choices and give them tools that create more opportunity for themselves and their children.
