Carl Snyder
Financial Literacy Advocate & Professional Basketball Player with The Basketball League

Personal Notes
Hello everyone,
I am currently an active professional basketball player that has played in the The Basketball League(TBL) and over seas in Asia and Mexico over the last 3 years. There are many avenues and paths one can go down when it comes to financial literacy. As an athlete myself, it is something I enjoy learning about to not only help myself but others around me by teaching them what I know about how to handle and understand finances. I still personally have a lot to learn in this field and will do what I can to help others continue to grow as well as myself in better understanding how to be financially literate.
Carl Snyder, The Basketball League (TBL) and the National Financial Educators Council
Since 2020 The Basketball League (TBL), in collaboration with the National Financial Educators Council (NFEC), has hosted a financial literacy contest among players and the 49 TBL teams located around the United States. Players compete against each other for the title of National Financial Literacy MVP based on the following criteria: 1) education; 2) advocacy; and 3) leadership. Carl Snyder of the Wenatchee Bighorns was one of two players honored with the Conference Champion title in 2023, a recognition of his involvement in financial education promotional campaigns across that year.
“I have younger cousins who look up to me,” Snyder commented about earning the title, “and one of the things I want to try and teach them is how to be good with money.” As part of his advocacy efforts, Carl completed and passed the NFEC’s Certified Financial Education Instructor (CFEI®) course, taking a place among the top certified financial educators in the country.
TBL and the NFEC work together to spread financial literacy throughout TBL’s professional sports league communities. This campaign kicked off in 2020 with the objective to train TBL teams, executives, and staff how to teach personal finance. Other partners that generously support the campaign include Barons, Broad St. South Podcast with Angel Martinez, and the fans and teams in the 49 TBL cities.
These young men demonstrate a commitment to promoting personal finance education in their communities,” says Vince Shorb, CEO of the NFEC. “We appreciate their efforts as positive role models for today’s youth.”
The National Financial Educators Council (NFEC) is a social enterprise organization whose stated mission is to improve financial capability among communities worldwide. The NFEC aims to increase access to financial literacy resources that represent best practices in financial education.
The Basketball League (TBL) is dedicated to delivering a World Class Professional Basketball experience to its communities, fans, and business partners. The league’s mission is to provide communities with professional basketball teams that give an affordable, quality family entertainment experience and provide players with educational opportunities to learn from nationally acclaimed life skills classes for financial literacy, health and wellness, nutrition, preventive medicine, and sports biomechanics.
