Teaching Financial Literacy for the Health of Society: Lindsey Zerbinos

I teach financial literacy in a Title-1 school in Denver, Colorado – a place where the American dream still flickers in the hopes of children who have been taught that education unlocks opportunity. They come to school ambitious, curious, and hungry to learn. And then I watch an education system they did not choose fail to provide the tools they need to survive the reality waiting outside the classroom.

Financial literacy is the most urgent form of education in America today – not just for the well-being of individuals, but for the health of society. As we enter an era defined by artificial intelligence, digital markets, automation, and algorithmic incentives, the knowledge gap will widen unless every student understands how money works. AI will magnify everything – advantages and disadvantages – depending on whether someone has access to financial education.

American education was not designed to build financially independent citizens. It evolved from ancient philosophical roots to industrial utility – a system optimized for compliance, not capability. We pretend memorization is mastery and standardized testing equals preparation, while sending students into a society organized around contracts, credit scores, taxes, interest, insurance structures, mortgages, and markets – without ever providing a map.

Education should build citizens, thinkers, and leaders – not just students. America is a promise, not an inheritance. We praise equal opportunity, yet deny the lower and middle classes the knowledge that actually creates mobility. Financial education is a cornerstone of freedom. Every child deserves access to it – not in college, when debt is real, and not at 25 when mistakes compound faster than interest – but from their very first years in school.

Teach a child how the world works – and they can change it.
