Personal Statement
After graduating from high school in Miami, Florida, I followed in my father’s footsteps to join the US Army. My active-duty assignment was in Southern Germany, where I served honorably as an administrative specialist in personnel for a nuclear lance missile battalion commander. After leaving the military, I pursued a career as a federal immigration officer with the US Department of Justice. This experience gave me a unique perspective on the challenges facing immigrant communities and how important it is to create safe, inclusive environments.
I went on obtain a Masters in Information Technology from Barry University in Miami. Since then, I’ve spent almost two decades in the business sector, starting a federally-certified minority Small 8a entrepreneurial business. Being mentored by the legendary late Orzell Billingsley Jr. of Alabama, who served as lead attorney to Martin Luther King, Jr., gave me a strong heritage background as a Black American civil rights business leader. In that role, I developed my deep commitment to civil rights and social justice and dedication to helping the poor and disenfranchised citizens of Florida – especially communities of color.
Working with underprivileged and underserved Floridians has shown me first-hand how many individuals are struggling with debt, food or housing insecurity, and credit problems, all due to simply lacking knowledge about money management. On the flip side, I’ve seen how financial literacy can empower people to make smart financial choices and avoid debt, bankruptcy, and financial insecurity. That’s why I recently earned my credentials as a Certified Financial Education Instructor® and Certified Financial Wellness Professional through the National Financial Educators Council. I want to share my knowledge and experiences to help people understand the importance of budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt.
Leading this financial wellness campaign in the Miami area and contributing to the Florida Financial Educators Council’s Advisory Board will give me a chance to bring personal finance literacy initiatives across the state, providing guidance and education to people in socially underserved and under-represented communities. By forging partnerships and alliances with non-profit, government, and corporate sponsors, I hope to make a real, powerful difference in Florida communities and in people’s lives.
