Personal Statement
For nearly 10 years, I have dedicated myself to the field of geriatric medicine. However, beyond my professional accomplishments, my true passion lies in promoting financial wellness. Witnessing the unique financial struggles faced by my patients, medical students, residents, and fellows, I became deeply committed to integrating financial literacy into medical education. I believe that empowering healthcare professionals with financial knowledge is essential for their personal well-being and for providing holistic care to their patients.
The importance of financial education struck me during a particularly challenging time in my life. Early in my career, I was overwhelmed by student loans and financial uncertainties. I remember one night vividly – the soft hum of my refrigerator in the dimly lit kitchen as I pored over student loan statements, feeling a sense of hopelessness as I was in more debt than I thought possible. It was then that I realized the profound impact financial literacy could have on one’s life, and dedicated myself to ensuring that medical learners are equipped with the tools they need to maintain financial wellness. In a similar vein, I have countless patients on fixed incomes trying to navigate the complexities of one of the most expensive healthcare industries in the world. Their stories, coupled with my own experiences, reinforced my belief in the necessity of financial education.
My involvement in the financial wellness movement began when I recognized the gap in financial education for medical learners. I recall mentoring a group of medical students who were anxious about managing their finances alongside their future demanding careers. I aim to provide future healthcare providers with the tools and knowledge to secure their financial futures and to better serve their patients without the burden of financial worry.
Being part of the National Financial Educators Council campaign allows me to bridge my two passions: medicine and financial wellness. Through this platform, I can work toward my goal of integrating financial education into medical curricula, ensuring that every healthcare professional is equipped to manage their finances effectively. This campaign not only helps me achieve my personal and professional goals but also enables me to make a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals, fostering a community where financial literacy is accessible to all.
