Chores for Kids: Complimentary Project for Parents & Children (age 3 to 18)
Children are constantly exposed to financial influences – and unfortunately, most children experience more negative influences than positive ones. Such influences come in the form of advertisements, peer interactions, and parental upbringing, and their impact is made worse by the lack of financial literacy training for kids.
How to Combat Poor Financial Habits in Children
To combat this problem, it’s essential for parents and teachers to make a conscious and consistent effort to discuss finances, model good financial decision-making, and provide opportunities for kids to practice earning, budgeting, saving, and spending, especially while they still have the safety net of living at home and receiving family support.
Assigning chores for kids and having them practice adulthood by contributing to paying bills, saving money, and making early financial decisions will help them prepare for life’s financial realities.
How will the Family Chore Project Help?
The project-based nature of the Family Chore Project gives children the opportunity to learn and practice 21st-century skills such as personal, social, and family responsibility; planning; critical thinking; reasoning; communication; and decision-making.
The Family Chore Project helps you structure a system of chores for kids and income that will help your children develop positive money management skills and a habit of working to earn money. We’ve separated the setup of chores for kids by age so it’s appropriate for their developmental level. The project also encourages children to take charge of their own financial learning through budgeting and decision-making around when and how to save, spend, and/or share their money.
Throughout this project, children apply these financial concepts to real-life situations that matter to them and then learn and grow from those experiences. This process helps them develop behaviors – and eventually habits – that encourage thoughtful money decision-making. In this way, children not only learn to succeed in this Chore Project, but also develop the foundational skills they need to make smart financial decisions for the rest of their lives.
