CFLP – Certified Financial Literacy Professional℠ Certification Program Fulfills a Variety of Goals

Looking for financial education that raises people’s financial capabilities while also offering a professional-level certification designation? The National Financial Educators Council offers several certification programs, one of which is the Certified Financial Literacy Professional℠ – CFLP – training.

Who might be interested in pursuing this professional designation? Financial educators looking for professional development opportunities to broaden the scope and depth of their topic mastery. Human Resources departments seeking coursework to help their company’s employees address personal finance issues. Individuals and families who just want to understand and improve their financial situations. These are just a few of the people who can benefit from taking the Certified Financial Literacy Professional℠ course available through the NFEC.

The Certified Financial Literacy Professional℠ programming was developed to qualify professionals who want to demonstrate their knowledge across 10 core personal finance topic areas. Graduates receive certification that proves their expertise in understanding, applying, and analyzing the following topics: Financial Psychology; Savings, Expenses, & Budgeting; Account Management & Team Members; Loans & Debt; Credit Profile; Income; Economic & Government Influences; Risk Management & Insurance; Investing & Personal Financial Planning; Education & Skill Development.

The NFEC selected these topics for its coursework in adherence with the organization’s own standards for learning outcomes, the Financial Literacy Standards & Framework for Learners. These standards lay out the benchmarks that guide learning objectives across these key personal finance subject areas. The NFEC has applied this framework to deploy financial education resources, materials, and tools to more than 46,000 organizations over the past decade.

The CFLP℠ training course is set up to fulfill a variety of personal and organizational objectives. The two primary categories of objectives that the coursework serves are 1) professional development and 2) compliance goals. For professional development, the training can serve educators who want to deepen their topic knowledge across the wide range of personal finance subjects; or financial professionals who seek to learn more ways to help their clients succeed. Individuals who simply want to gain more knowledge about money management to improve their finances and move closer to gaining financial independence can also take advantage of this coursework. People from any profession – even major league sports players – can benefit from this type of training.

On the compliance side, the Certified Financial Literacy Professional℠ program offers several options for organizations to meet requirements. For example, the training might be offered to banking employees to enhance their customer service capabilities. An organization’s HR department might make the coursework available to help employees facing wage garnishments or encountering other financial issues that may be detracting from their work performance and productivity. At a university, the financial aid office might recommend the programming to help students avoid or handle student debt.

Earning the Certified Financial Literacy Professional℠ designation requires a total 60 hours of online lesson completion and passing a 90 – 130-question test (number of questions varies by version) with a passing score of 80% or higher. The test is administered online in a closed-book format. Ongoing education and testing is required every three years to maintain certification. The continuing education requirement must be completed within seven months of one’s certification anniversary date. The NFEC provides training resources to help certificate holders update their knowledge and pass the 25 – 40-question follow-up tests.

The versatile and comprehensive nature of this training makes the CFLP℠ program an excellent choice for meeting personal and organizational goals. More information about the background, requirements, learning standards, and investment for this training can be found on the program webpage. The CFLP℠ is just one of the NFEC’s certification programs; educators interested in teaching personal finance concepts to others may find greater value in the Certified Financial Education Instructor℠ Certification training.
