HUD Certified Housing Counselor Training or NFEC Certification?

While there is hud certified housing counselor training available, you might better consider the Certified Personal Financial Wellness Consultant program offered by the National Financial Educators Council (NFEC). When you graduate from the NFEC Financial Coach training, you have earned credentials that indicate your capability to help people increase their financial wellness.

Every person brings a singular combination of financial behaviors, relationships, and situation to the table. For that reason, a financial counselor needs specialized training in addition to housing counselor certification. The NFEC Financial Coach program was designed to certify only those counselors who have achieved the learning and experiential levels that ensure positive results among consumers who receive their services.

What Competencies NFEC Financial Coaches Must Achieve

Although hud housing counselor certification training will have its own set of requirements, there is a set level of competency that a NFEC Financial Coach must demonstrate in order to become certified. These professionals are enabled to conduct various services that raise financial capabilities among individuals and communities alike.
The coursework, experiential, and implementation requirements of the NFEC Financial Coach programming are held to the highest standards. Those who earn certification have both knowledge and practical skills to support clients toward achieving their goals.

NFEC Financial Coach competencies are assured by the fact that they have finished 180 hours of training, representing 18 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) and earned a passing score (80%+) on a proctored final examination.

Program graduates have achieved high competency levels as defined by the National Institutes of Health Proficiency Scale. Their demonstrated advanced capabilities, along with the ongoing support they receive from the NFEC, ensure their expertise and earn them recognition as authorities in the financial counseling arena.

Garner On-the-job Counseling Experience

Clients don’t want financial counselors who learned their skills by watching a couple of videos. That would be like hiring a surgeon who learned how to perform an appendectomy on YouTube. Consumers want professionals who have succeeded at performing their skills in the past with demonstrated good outcomes.

Although it is uncertain how much practical experience is included in hud housing counselor training, we can say that the NFEC Financial Coach training mandates implementation and practical application of the learned skills so counselors are prepared to serve their clients with confidence and aplomb.

NFEC Financial Coach Certification Requires Four Levels of Experience

High Benchmarks for Financial Counselors

It is possible that hud certified housing counselor training sets high standards for completion. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau does give guidance for distributing lists of housing counselors to mortgage applicants. However, we know for sure that financial counselors certified by the NFEC are held to the highest benchmarks for qualification and training. The NFEC wrote its own standards with guidance from over 12 regulatory authorities – FINRA, the SEC, the FTC, APA, and ICF, among several others – and centered those standards around the idea that counselors maintain fiduciary responsibility to clients.

Although financial counselors are not regulated at the governmental level, the NFEC created its standards to offer a layer of protection to both clients and counselors. The benchmarks include an empirically-based teaching framework to guide education quality; common language to boost communication; and awareness resources that inform the public of the importance of choosing financial educators who are well-qualified.

Integral Process Features and Resources

In addition to giving you effective counseling skills, the NFEC Financial Coach training goes beyond hud housing counselor training by helping you hone processes and giving you access to financial counseling resource materials that will boost your success as a counselor. The coursework includes training in how to use the processes and experience working with the systems.

Built right into the training, you will receive all the necessary resources to conduct each phase of counseling. The coursework includes the exact materials you’ll use when you begin counseling for real – and you’ll practice using them in targeted activities, thus gaining the application experience to complete your training.

Comprehending the Life Stage HUD Certified Housing Counselor Training Serves

The services the hud certified housing counselor training prepares people to provide are fairly narrow in scope, limited to those areas that relate directly to housing. Such services might include helping you buy or rent a home, evaluate options for paying a mortgage, or prevent foreclosure.
