Teaching Personal Finance – Certified Financial Education Instructor

The Certified Financial Education Instructor training program was developed by the NFEC to improve the effectiveness of educators that teach personal finance. CFEI graduates report improved confidence when teaching personal finance; they enjoy the process more and the participant achieve improved results. Graduates are among the most qualified financial educators and have gained the training so they are able to quantify their impact.

The material shared on this page is for those seeking in-person or group training. For individuals or organizations seeking virtual video training and certification, visit the teaching money management page.

Recognized Unique Coursework
The Certified Financial Education Instructor program does not teach instructors how to copy the methods of other instructors with a specific curriculum. Regurgitating lesson plans produces boring presentations that lack authenticity and turn the audience off.  The NFEC recognizes that each instructor brings their own personal background, passion and energy to the presentation, so the CFEI coursework teaches the presentation, education and personal finance lessons that allow instructors to connect with the audience in an authentic manner.

The Certified Financial Education Instructor professional development program is approved for continuing education credits by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.  Organizations like the Salvation Army Dallas, Interfaith Housing Services, Madeira City Schools, Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union, Western Connecticut State University, NCMSC and organizations globally with a desire to teach people of all ages about money – from kids to adults.

Upon graduation, those that successfully passed the coursework receive their Certified Financial Education Instructors certificate and can conduct personal finance presentations as a CFEI.

Opportunities for Graduates
The Certified Financial Education Instructor designation increases the credibility of the financial educator.   “…it has given the program the extra boost and noteworthiness.  Since our certification has become public, we’ve received several calls from community service organizations and summer camps interested in our financial education program,” states Kim Knox of the North Carolina Minority Support Center.
Those that graduate the CFEI coursework have the opportunity to be featured speakers, teach classes, host financial literacy events and select individuals may be chosen to conduct NFEC events.

There are a variety of organizations that seek to deliver personal finance programs to those they serve, including: nonprofits organizations, colleges, religions groups, schools, businesses and community centers.  Many professional and companies leverage the NFEC material to align with their business and organizational objectives.

Certified Financial Education Instructor – teaching personal finance coursework
The Certified Financial Education Instructor program provides training specifically designed to improve the participant’s ability to teach financial literacy effectively.  For those interested in building an outreach business or adding a financial literacy component to a current business model, the NFEC also offers financial education business program.

The National Financial Educators Council has a vested interest in the success of our graduates.  The more people you are able to reach with money management training, the closer it brings us to accomplishing our mission of “creating a world where people are informed and able to make qualified financial decisions that improve their lives, the lives of those they love, and the lives of those they impact around the globe.”

Six Essential Topics of the CFEI Training Program
The NFEC identified six areas essential to effective financial literacy instruction:  measurement, financial psychology, subject knowledge, student experience, core subject integration, bridging practical application with educational standards, and overall program design.  These topics comprise the Certified Financial Education Instructor professional development coursework.  Details are provided below:

Participants / Student Experience
Successful initiatives are those that maximize the experiences of end-users and deliver content in ways that entertain, engage, and educate participants—thus ensuring student enjoyment and significantly improving retention rates.

The NFEC’s Certified Financial Education Instructor program teaches participants how to create an overall educational initiative that covers key topics like course design, delivery, and teaching techniques that motivate participants to take positive action.

The training course teaches people to instruct effectively, no matter their personality or past experience.  Graduates of the CFEI coursework leave with an understanding of educational tools and theories to structure coursework, and learn to employ teaching styles to meet specific student needs.

Curriculum Training
Other financial educator training programs simply teach instructors to deliver lessons specified by a given financial literacy curriculum. Such training produces boring presentations that lack authenticity and fail to connect with the audience.

The NFEC has observed that each person brings their own unique experience and background to the educator role.  Therefore the NFEC training gives educators skills to share their passion for teaching financial literacy in an authentic, believable fashion.  Certified Financial Education Instructors learn to connect with the audience—fulfilling participant needs while engaging the audience in the process, sharing their inner passion to help participants improve financial capabilities.

Specific training on the NFEC financial literacy curriculum is also provided with the philosophy of authenticity in mind.  That is, while the training provides step-by-step instruction, it also offers instructors flexibility to incorporate their individual experience into the material.

Financial Psychology
Personal finance is different from any other subject.  Each person brings his or her own personal experiences, emotions, and relationship with money into the class; instructor perspective plays a significant role in determining ability to learn the subject matter and translate knowledge into action.

The NFEC’s Curriculum Advisory Board includes a psychologist and financial education experts who understand the emotions involved with making financial decisions.  Advisory Board members have personally interviewed more than 50,000 people about their personal finances.  Their expertise in financial psychology is shared during the training, giving CFEI graduates the ability to proactively address those areas that may hold participants back and leverage those areas that can propel them toward achieving financial wellness.

Measurement
Financial education programs with clear objectives and tools to quantify program success benefit both the host organization and the participants.  Identifying key outcomes early in the developmental process helps program design meet the participants’ educational objectives.  Quantifying participant improvement assists organizations to build a proven program—one that can be leveraged to raise funding through grants and sponsorships.

The CFEI training program teaches participants how to measure performance objectives and provides a clear framework for instructors to follow.  The course provides the tools and training that enable Certified Instructors to quantify the improvement in participants’ financial capability.  The NFEC also employs tools that measure one’s long-term behavior change to determine the lasting impact of the program on participants’ financial practices.

Personal Financial Knowledge
Possessing knowledge about personal finance subject matter is essential to delivering the material effectively.  The NFEC has observed that instructors who feel secure in their knowledge of topics covered in the coursework deliver the material more effectively and encourage interaction; those who are insecure in their knowledge often stick to the instructor’s guide script and receive lower marks on the post-class assessment.

The NFEC has trained people starting from various levels of financial knowledge—from college students with zero knowledge of personal finance, to financial professionals who need only the briefest review.  Regardless of their initial level, by the end of the training graduates report feeling confident with the subject matter and knowledgeable about where to access relevant information.

Practical Application Aligned with Core Curriculum Standards
Schools are under significant time pressure to teach core coursework.  To maximize reach and effective use of classroom time, the NFEC aligned its curriculum and teacher training with core education standards.

The real world meets the classroom with the NFEC’s professional development course.  This program was designed by a team of educators, active financial professionals, and personal finance experts. Together these professionals built a training program that combines theory-based financial education with practical application.  This “real world” approach created a financial literacy certification course that has measurable, lasting positive impact on graduates.

The educator training course teaches instructors how to leverage the coursework to meet standards set by the National Council of Economic Education, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Council of English Teachers, and National Council for Social Studies.  The financial education lesson plans also are designed around many California and Texas state standards.

Program Design & Consultation
To ensure sustainability of a financial literacy initiative, alignment with larger personal, business, and philanthropic objectives is critical.  Financial literacy provides an excellent vehicle to raise funds, generate awareness, build community goodwill, obtain media attention, and build relationships with other organizations.  All these benefits occur within the context of educating those you serve with key skills to enhance their lives.
