National Financial Educators Council Starts a Financial Literacy Campaign to Teach Kids About Money |
| |
Two of the top members of President Barack Obama’s cabinet were clear that financial illiteracy among today’s youth is the next crisis that will plague the economy in the future if we don’t act now as a nation. |
| |
Secretary Timothy Geithner stated, "We're moving forward with financial reform and strong protection for consumers, but we must also do a better job of making sure our students graduate from high school with a better understanding of basic economics, basic finance and the benefits and risks associated with debt," Treasury. Education Secretary Arne Duncan agreed. "The reality is that all children don't know the basics of saving and investing. It's a skill they need to be successful in our economy," Duncan said. |
| |
The National Financial Educator’s Council – an organization dedicated to increasing youth financial education through financial education events, products and financial literacy curriculum instruction – agrees with the sentiment. However, they believe that sustainable and ongoing financial literacy events will directly impact the effectiveness of the program. |
| |
“Comprehensive financial education events and programs that reach our youth multiple times through several different sources impact the retention of this material.” said Vince Shorb of the NFEC. “We see measurable results when we start off with a high energy financial literacy event that get participants excited about the subject of money. This is typically followed by financial literacy lesson plans, teacher training, multimedia learning center, financial education camps and parent training.” |
| |
Their signature financial education event, Money XLive, is an MTV award style event that brings out celebrities, sports stars, live bands, entertainers and financial education experts all in a full concert style environment. “While Money XLive is the preferred event for large scale financial literacy initiatives, the self-hosted financial education events are becoming increasingly popular.” |
| |
“Since our team of certified financial educators can only reach a limited number of people, we have put a lot of our focus into helping nonprofits, financial planners, students, schools and community leaders to empower tomorrow’s generation with financial skills. Financial literacy is a grassroots movement, and we provide complete financial education resources so the movement will spread faster,” states Shorb who developed the Money XLive Multimedia workshop so people can host their own financial education events. |
| |
The NFEC’s financial education event, the Real Money Experience is where students visit fourteen different stations and make life decisions that will impact them when they move away from home. Upon entering the RMX event, they choose a career and make education choices that affect their income. They decide on clothing and transportation options that fit their career while also fitting it into their budget. At this financial literacy workshop, participants quickly become aware of the ongoing expense of each decision as they learn about insurance, dry cleaning and utility costs. |
| |
Highly trained & interactive volunteers help participants set up a savings plan that matches their future lifestyle goals, create a budget, make credit and investment decisions. This financial education workshop features one volunteer per every six participants to ensure students will have one-on-one time to get practical financial tips while they have fun playing the ‘game of life’. |
| |
The NFEC supports communities that are putting together comprehensive financial literacy workshops and promoting high profile financial education events. By providing our youth access to these practical financial education events we are helping them avoid the struggle that many face. To that end, and in order to help empower all of the children in our nation, Money XLive Financial Literacy Workshops have been created to help facilitators host their own financial education events in their community. |
| |
Sarano Kelley of the Stand Up for Financial Literacy campaign states, “Empowering citizens that are concerned with the financial well-being of our youth is an important step in ending this national financial illiteracy epidemic. We are calling on all financial professionals and concerned citizens to go into classrooms across the country and share financial wisdom.” |
| |
Financial literacy is still not taught in most high schools and colleges so turkey financial education events are essential so that other groups that support the national financial literacy campaign have the opportunity to take positive action. Nonprofit organizations like the Joyner-Walker Foundation and the Brockman Educational Institute are taking it upon themselves to provide financial literacy training for students. |
| |
For some areas, financial literacy programs are difficult to locate. To this end, having turnkey financial education event packages help concerned citizens make a positive impact in their community. |
| |
Financial Education Events |
| |
Financial literacy month is a busy time to host financial education events. Financial literacy month is designed to help raise awareness about real world money matters. Financial literacy is the ability to understand finance, specifically to be able to make informed decisions about how you go about managing your money. |
| |
Financial literacy month focuses on helping individuals improve their financial literacy skills many organizations do so by hosting financial literacy events. Many of these money management workshops in the United States are put on by private organizations and in the United Kingdom the Financial Services Authority sponsors financial education events. There has been a lot of effort put into having citizens be able to understand how to manage money. |
| |
During financial literacy month you can expect to see: |
| |
1) A variety of organizations that host financial education events to improve the money management skills of their community. These money management workshops are done to raise awareness, educate the people they serve and many groups use these as a way to raise funds.
Money XLive has financial literacy events that are designed to attract teenagers to learn personal finance lessons before an emergency occurs. This event included live entertainment, sports stars and celebrities in full concert venue so it builds students money management skills.
Several universities across the country also hold financial literacy events and are able to educate the students they serve. |
| |
2) With today’s economic climate there are campaigns that are calling on volunteers from across the country to help today’s youth pick up money skills. National financial literacy campaigns, like StandUp for Financial Literacy, are designed to reach as many people as possible with practical money skills. Stand Up for Financial Literacy is the largest public-private partnership designed to empower people with life changing money skills through hosting financial education events.
They reach out to concerned citizens to share money management skills with todays youth during financial literacy month. The National Financial Educators Council’s turnkey financial education camps, workshops and events are simple ways people can bring money management skills to their community
