Financial Literacy Month Promotions |
Personal finance takes center stage in each year in April as part of the national financial literacy month campaign. The US Senate designated April as financial literacy month in 2003 and passed the official resolution (resolution 316) shortly thereafter. Financial literacy month was created to help raise awareness about financial illiteracy and promote financial education events across the country. Financial literacy month also focuses attention on helping individuals pick up practical money management skills and educate people of all ages on basic financial matters. |

Preparing for Financial Literacy Month |
Preparations for financial literacy month should start before January because this is the busiest time for many of the top financial education companies. Start by barnstorming on activities or campaigns you want to promote over the financial literacy month. Review the ideas below to stimulate your brainstorming.
The next step is to locate an organization that can provide the material, host the event or support your efforts. The biggest mistake we notice is that people consistently reinvent the wheel. There are hundreds of financial literacy programs on the market so find one that suites you best and implement it.

|
|
This greatly reduces the cost and time it takes your organization to implement so you can invest the money into the actual outreach.
Then evaluate the material and see how it fits within your organization. Be sure to choose the material that meets national financial education standards and balances that with practical personal finance lessons that can be used in the real world. The material that the National Financial Educators Council produces exceeds the national financial education standards, and was developed through a collaborative effort between educators, financial experts and community leaders. Taking the steps listed above will help to ensure your program will be a success and truly impact the lives of those you reach. Continue reading the articles below to |

Financial Literacy Month Programs |
The month of April is when the national financial literacy month is recognized, and over those four weeks there are thousands of financial education events taking place across the country. This is the period when financial literacy advocates have the most momentum, and attempt to capitalize on the positive media coverage.
Here are some of the events taking place over April:
Money XLive is the event that is hosted during the financial literacy month and participants count down the days before they see their favorite celebrities and sport stars on stage sharing their personal financial lessons.
The Real Money Experience is an event that many groups host during money smart week and financial literacy month. This is a hands-on experiential learning event that has students making real world financial decisions that they will face when they move out on their own.
These are just a few of the events taking place during financial literacy month and money smart week. Throughout April, there are hundreds of financial education events taking place across the country, on college campuses, though nonprofit organizations, in the nations elementary and high schools and through the efforts of concerned citizen.
All the financial literacy events taking place over financial literacy month and money smart week have a common objective: to increase personal finance knowledge and raise awareness about the importance of that topic.
During April, there are many collaborative efforts taking place. Corporations, schools, nonprofits and government organizations host financial education events to celebrate the financial literacy month and money smart week.
Many youth are also actively involved in promoting financial literacy month. The peer-to-peer financial education model can attribute its growth over this time. More and more colleges, especially those universities that recognize financial issues cause the most dropouts, host financial education events for students.
The National Financial Literacy Campaign reaches out to financial advisors and community leaders to go into the nation’s public high schools during financial literacy month. This campaign goal is to ensure that every student has a financial education and also to motive them to help instill the message of good money management habits. These motivated students can be the ones leading other awareness campaigns in the future.
Other volunteers for financial literacy month campaigns host their own financial education events. The National Financial Educators Council provides organization the tools necessary to host events, classes and workshops. Many of these can be included during financial literacy month.
For those interested in hosting a financial education event contact a NFEC representative, and they will provide all the training and material necessary to make your event a success.
With the ‘Great Recession’ behind us (according to official reports) more people are now aware of the importance to having a good understanding of practical money management skills. Share these financial skill sets with members of your community during money smart week and financial literacy month. Those skills may impact our youth their entire life. |
